Respect Is Earned, Not Given

loyalNothing promotes respect and morale like the loyalty of the manager to his or her people.

Take all the blame, pass on all the praise. Never hide behind your employees, never throw them under the bus. Do that and your people will respect and support you, even if you have to make unpopular decisions.
